Eurydice

Orpheus loses Eurydice through a lack of faith and trust. He seeks reassurance by seeing, by verifying—a very human reaction when faced with the unfathomable. It is a desire for control and possession that ultimately leads only to disappearance and loss. Eurydice symbolizes that which remains forever out of reach: the Other. She is not a being who can be fully grasped, understood, or possessed, but an irreducibly mysterious presence. She embodies that element of otherness which always eludes us, even in the deepest love. To seek to abolish this distance—to lift the veil of the unknown—is sometimes to risk losing the very thing that made the bond beautiful.
